Fine Antique Indian Mughal Gold & Gem-set White Nephrite Jade Pendant (Haldili)

18th century
Description

This very fine pendant (haldili) is carved from a single, translucent piece of white or ‘mutton fat’ nephrite jade (the colour is more a pale greyish-green and with excellent uniformity). Circa 18th to early 19th century.

It is from northern India and probably made in Delhi. It accords with Mughal tastes, although could be worn by both Muslims and Hindus. It is decorated with various gems among a tree-of-life pattern.

The design is set with four types of gems – A diamond, three rubies, three emeralds and forty sapphire beads on the 21 carat solid gold chain,

The pendant is all in gold kundan settings, and all within a gold border. The gold used is typically as close to 24-carats as possible.

The top has a small rectangular section which is transversely pierced to allow hanging, usually from around the neck.

Such pendants were considered to have talismanic properties. The reverses of some are inscribed with Koranic verses in Arabic or Farsi although the back of this example is plain.

Related examples are illustrated in Bala Krishnan & Kumar (1999, p. 255), Untracht (1997, p. 177) and Geoffroy-Schneiter (2011, p. 87). And click here to see a related example at Sotheby’s London.

This example is particularly fine – indeed, finer than most published examples. It is in very good condition without losses and repairs just a blemish on the lower reverse side.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Haldili is a traditional Indian pendant, often made from carved nephrite jade or agate, associated with Mughal court culture and historic jewellery craftsmanship. These pieces were frequently worn as protective amulets and decorated with gold inlay and precious stones.

Mughal jade pieces typically feature white or green nephrite jade inlaid with 24-carat gold wire using the kundan setting technique. Gemstones such as rubies, emeralds, spinels, diamonds, and glass accent decorative floral motifs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved jade surfaces, precise kundan foil-backed stone settings, soft edge wear, and historical floral or foliate patterns consistent with South Asian metalwork traditions.

A historic statement pendant pairs effectively with understated contemporary evening wear or minimal, tailored necklines, allowing the intricate gold inlay and stone setting to serve as the focal point.

Store the item in a soft cloth pouch away from moisture and hard gemstones. Clean gently using a dry, soft microfiber cloth, avoiding harsh liquid chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners that could dislodge gold inlay work.
