C19th Italian carved statuary marble “Grand Tour” souvenir reduction sculpture of Moses after Michelangelo Buonarroti Simoni (1475-1564) .
Well-executed carved marble reduction of the seated figure of Moses by the Italian High Renaissance artist Michelangelo c.1513-1515, housed in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli , Rome . Commissioned and sculpted for the tomb of Pope Julius II , it depicts the seated biblical figure Moses with horns on his head , based on a mis-interpreted description of Exodus in the Vulgate, the Latin translation of the Bible used at that time.
Moses is portrayed in a powerful pose , his right hand protecting the stone tablets bearing the Commandments. Michelangelo’s study shows Moses fondling his beard , the combination with the horns , giving him an inhuman, perhaps demonic aspect .
This arresting and thought-provoking sculpture is in excellent original condition, with only a minor chip to lower edge of his robes and a further minor chip to the integral block plinth base.
*Marble and bronze sculptures such as this example , were produced in the C18th and C19th for sale as expensive souvenirs to wealthy tourists completing “The Grand Tour” of the classical and cultural sights and sites of Europe.
