Rushlight Stool

19th century
Description

Picture evenings like today, with the autumn days drawing in, the fire logs burning brightly, the dog hoarding as much of the warmth as he can and his master bending down to light the rushlight that’s been placed into the top of the stool with one pushed into the hole in the stools seat side. Got the picture ? Now this is where this stool spent its days with burn marks to prove it. A charming and rare piece of vernacular history. This stool, incidentally, came from the same farm as the next stool with the whittling knife blade. I would like to keep them together so anyone interested in both the deal will be made sweeter.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A rushlight stool is a low-level wooden stand historically used in rural households to support rushlight holders or candles, or to perform low-level work near a hearth.

These stools were crafted using traditional vernacular joinery methods from local hardwoods such as oak or elm, featuring a thick hand-hewn slab seat fitted with splayed legs secured through wedged mortise joints.

Authentic examples display hand-cut surface textures, irregular wear around the base of the legs, visible wedged tenons flush with the top surface, and natural timber shrinkage along the grain.

A primitive wooden stool functions as a textural accent piece, ideal for elevating small decorative objects, acting as a low plant stand, or resting alongside a fireplace hearth.

Maintain the surface by dusting with a dry cloth and occasionally applying a beeswax polish to nourish the timber, avoiding harsh chemicals or placement near direct heat sources.
