FAQs

Rococo style, originating in 18th-century France, is characterised by asymmetrical C-scrolls, S-scrolls, acanthus leaves, and naturalistic motifs. In mirror design, these details are executed in relief using carved timber or moulded gesso overlaid with leaf gilding.

Traditional construction incorporates a solid timber backing frame, often oak or pine, coated with gessoa compound of chalk and animal glue. Detailed ornamentation is sculpted into or moulded from gesso before gold leaf gilding is applied over a bole foundation.

Authentic pieces exhibit hairline cracking across the gesso surface, known as craquelure, along with evidence of hand-cut joinery on the timber backing. Original mirror glass may also feature natural foxing or faint dark spots caused by the historical oxidisation of the silvering.

Position the mirror above a contemporary sideboard or mantelpiece to create a visual contrast between detailed historical carving and clean modern lines. Placing it opposite a window maximises natural light reflection and adds visual depth to the room.

Dust the frame using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners that dissolve gesso and strip gilding. Clean the mirror glass with a slightly dampened cloth, ensuring moisture does not contact the gilded edge.
