As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this charming Meiji Period 1868-1912, ceramic baluster vase from the studios of the highly coveted Imperial artist Miyagawa Makuzu Kozan 1842-1916, on this occasion Kozan II has potted a traditional baluster shaped vase that has been simply decorated with sprigs of Imperial chrysanthemum using various shades of underglaze blue, the vase taking on the aesthetic of a much simpler Japanese taste as we reach towards the latter stages of the Meiji period, the underside nicely signed with a cobalt blue signature within concentric circles that translates to Makuzu Gama Kozan Sei, a seal used on works from around the 1910- 1915 period of production.Literature : Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan  (1842–1916) was a Japanese ceramist and was one of the major potters of the Meiji Period, his kilns were based in Yokohama and he went on to win many prizes and gold medals at the various expositions , eventually receiving the recognit...
