Silver and Cut Glass Sugar Caster London 1960 by Preece & Willicombe

1940 - 1960
Description

An impressive silver and cut glass sugar caster or sifter with a good weight and attractively shaped. The glass is square to the top and the sides flare outwards in triangular panels of plain and diamond patterned glass towards a smooth diamond shaped base. The cut glass is boldly patterned with some depth of relief creating a firm surface to grip.

The silver top is bell shaped with a small finial, ribbed decoration and crisply pierced stars allowing the sugar to flow. It fastens securely with a screw fitting which works smoothly.

Hallmarked as sterling silver, London 1960 by Preece & Willicombe.

A lovely tactile vintage sifter which would make a sweet gift!

Condition: There are one or two slight nibbles to the cut glass and one small chip near the shoulder but these are not at all obvious. The silver is in super condition and overall vintage condition is really very good.

Measurements:

Height: 15 cm Dimensions of base: 7.2 cm x 5.2 cm

Weight: 371 grams

All measurements are approximate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sugar caster, also referred to as a sugar sifter or dredge, is a tabletop vessel designed to sprinkle granulated or powdered sugar evenly over fruit, pastries, and desserts.

Traditional sugar casters are commonly constructed from sterling silver, silver plate, or cut glass fitted with perforated metal lids to allow smooth dispensing.

Authentic pieces feature official British hallmarks stamped into the silver, denoting the makers mark, silver purity standard, assay office symbol, and date letter.

It can be styled on a dining sideboard alongside glass decanters, placed on a breakfast tray, or displayed within a glass cabinet as part of a tableware collection.

The glass base should be washed by hand using warm water and mild detergent, while the silver top requires periodic cleaning with a soft cloth and non-abrasive silver polish to prevent oxidisation.
