This is a very attractive, Victorian letter opener, made c1870. The substantial handle is of beautiful, translucent, Scottish, banded agate in reds, orange, yellow and white - which has been polished and octagonally faceted. The blade is a very pretty mother-of-pearl. This piece has an engraved, silver mount, with floral decoration and a similar shaped pommel. Much like many other polished-stone jewellery and objects of virtue, made in Scotland during this period, the silver, which has been tested, is not hallmarked. This collector''s piece is in excellent antique condition, with only very minor signs of having been used.
