Double Bass, Ca 1950: Surrealist Musician's Landscape with Musical Instruments, Colourful French Oil on Board Painting

1940 - 1960
Description

Dynamic, high octane, clever and full of fun is this surrealist landscape dating from the 1950, which features a double bass, a xylophone, drums and more.

Acquired in France and very original in style, our oil on hardboard is unsigned. I have not been able to formally identify the artist, but the work reminds me of pictures I have seen by Endre Balint (1914-1986), a Hungarian modernist and surrealist who was a protégé of André Breton and who was active in Paris in the 1940s and 50s.

Measuring 65 x 46 cm, the painting is presented in an oak frame with luxurious liner. The overall framed size is 77 x 58 cm.

French surrealist paintings from the mid-20th century blend dreamlike narrative concepts with avant-garde stylistic influences. Artists frequently combined figurative elements, such as musical instruments, with imaginative landscapes using vivid colour palettes and simplified forms.

During the mid-20th century, artists frequently painted on rigid masonite or hardboard panels in addition to traditional canvas. Oil paint was applied directly using brushes or palette knives, often sealed with a protective varnish to preserve pigment saturation.

Authentic works from this era typically exhibit natural surface aging, light oxidisation or yellowing of binding mediums, and period-appropriate wear around the panel edges. Inspecting the reverse for maker stamps, panel branding, or original gallery labels also assists verification.

A vibrant surrealist panel serves best as a statement piece mounted above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table. Pairing the painting with clean-lined furniture or a subtle tray frame allows the vivid colours to anchor the rooms scheme.

Keep the painting in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight, excess moisture, and direct heat sources. Lightly dust the surface with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or natural hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or solvents.
