Solid Silver Cream Pail

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine quality solid silver cream pail. The piece is a good weight and in style is very much that of eighteenth-century cream pails. The pail is of a simple design with a ribbed design around the body imitating staves and a twisted handle replicating rope. There are a full and clear set of hallmarks for London, 1900 and Charles Stuart Harris. The firm of Charles Stuart Harris was a well established and prolific maker in the later Victorian period with a particular flair for fine quality pieces in earlier styles. The cream pail is in very good condition and a charming piece of novelty silver.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A silver cream pail is a miniature bucket-shaped vessel traditionally used on dining tables during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to serve cream or sugar. Designed with an overhead swing handle, these items formed part of formal tea and dessert services.

These vessels were typically raised from sterling silver sheet, featuring chased or engine-turned horizontal reeding for structural stability and decorative texture. Swinging bail handles were attached via soldered side lugs or hinges.

Authenticity is verified through official assay office hallmarks, maker marks, and date letters stamped onto the silver body. Genuine historic pieces display natural wear on the base and handle contact points alongside hand-finished craftsmanship.

A silver cream pail can be displayed on a sideboard, tray, or open shelf as a metallic accent. It can also function on a modern dining table to hold small flower stems, matchsticks, or condiments.

Clean solid silver using a soft cloth and specialised silver polish to remove tarnish, avoiding abrasive materials that scratch the metal. Store in a dry environment wrapped in acid-free tissue paper or anti-tarnish cloth to minimise oxidisation.
