The plate is signed on the bottom by Koshida and features a cross signifying the patronage of the powerful Shimazu family, who historically ruled the Satsuma area, further enhancing its collectible value. Koshida is a well-known and a prolific Satsuma pottery maker that has been producing ceramics since the Meiji era (1868-1912). It is particularly renowned for its intricate designs, delicate color palette, and use of gold embellishments. Koshida Satsuma pieces often depict scenes from Japanese folklore, history, and mythology, as well as everyday life. Koshida Satsuma pieces can be identified by their signature ''Koshida'' mark on the base, which is typically written in kanji characters.
