An antique Japanese hand-painted Satsuma pictorial crackle plate produced by Koshida factory during the Meiji period. This beautifully detailed plate depicts a classic natural landscape with a pagoda, river, bridge, and mountains in the distance. The plate is signed on the bottom by Koshida and features a cross signifying the patronage of the powerful Shimazu family, who historically ruled the Satsuma area, further enhancing its collectible value. Koshida is a well-known and a prolific Satsuma pottery maker that has been producing ceramics since the Meiji era (1868-1912). It is particularly renowned for its intricate designs, delicate color palette, and use of gold embellishments. Koshida Satsuma pieces often depict scenes from Japanese folklore, history, and mythology, as well as everyday life. Koshida Satsuma pieces can be identified by their signature ''Koshida'' mark on the base, which is typically written in kanji characters. Koshida production was decorated by some of the best artists and bears their marks as well as Koshida''s. These pieces are highly collectible and can be quite valuable, particularly those produced during the Meiji era, which are considered to be of the highest quality. Koshida factory was closed in 1927.The business seems to have reopened post war, either by a family member or by someone simply using a well-known name as a cachet. Koshida products are highly valued in the antique porcelain market, with increasing demand in recent years.
