A substantial bronze mortar which appears to have been made by John Clifton at Whitechapel with its band of shells and scrolls but was in fact made by Joshua Beardmore at the Barbican in around 1770.

Beardmore first appears in the London Directories in 1766, listed as ‘founder, Barbican’. The business name changed several times according to partnerships with Beardmore being last mentioned in 1787.
