A quirky early 19th century silver and stone set Danish ‘Hovedvansaeg’ – a vinaigrette/spice box, traditionally a betrothal gift. Urn shape with an amazing open-work orb finial, on a raised foot which is also the hinged spice compartment (it is also said that this lower compartment was for keeping a coin to put in the church collection), set with numerous faceted glass paste stones, the two central ones with rope twist borders, possibly rock crystal. Opens to reveal the original silver-gilt interior. Struck twice to the base with a rubbed maker’s mark and another mark. Fab collector’s thing.
Condition: In good collector’s condition, both lids open and shut ok, the bottom one is a bit loose. The stones with wear to the surfaces and facet edges.
Dimensions: Height: 110mm. 75g
