A large magnificent oil on canvas. Signed top right and dated 1889. In an unglazed high quality gilt frame. 142cm high x 114cm wide including the frame.
Léon-Jean-Bazille Perrault was a French academic painter born in Paris. He studied under prolific 19th century French painters François-Edouard Picot and William-Adolphe Bouguereau.
Growing up in a poor home, Léon Perrault saw his artistic talent as a means to escape destitution and to give his family a better life. Soon outgrowing the drawing lessons available in his native village of Poitiers, the young artist was given a pension for travel to Paris, and in 1853 entered the home and studio of François Edouard Picot. Perrault would go on to study at the Académie des Beaux Arts and the Académie Julian, where he would meet his friend and mentor William Bouguereau. Many of his most memorable compositions follow Bouguereau''s artistic example.
Léon Perrault enjoyed enormous success during his lifetime, exhibiting at the Salon regularly and earning medals in 1864, 1876, and 1878 as well as being named Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur in 1887.
