James Hadley Royal Worcester Exceptional Pair Joy And Sorrow Figurines

An exceptional pair English aesthetic movement porcelain pair of figurines portraying Joy and Sorrow by renowned potter and artist James Hadley (British, 1837-1903) dated 1896. The figurines stand raised on circular bases and portray young ladies partially clad with a hanging cloth with one holding her head in one hand and dead bird in the other depicting Sorrow. The other figure holds a bird close to her and kisses it depicting Joy. Both are exquisitely detailed and similarly hand painted in naturalistic tones with a blend of green and brick red to the draped cloths with gilded edging. The base is painted in lighter green with gilded edging, and the birds too are similarly painted. Both figures have slightly differing hair styles in shades of brown and one wears a gold bangle around her upper arm.
