Description

This rare and beautiful little vanity-bag - 'chanteh' in Persian - is piled on both faces, which is unusual, as the back is normally in plain-weave. It comprises a stylised flower depicted on a deep indigo-blue ground on one face and with three stylised 'botehs' (flame symbols from the Zoroastrians) on the other face.

Made by an Afshar nomad circa 1900 in Kerman Province, southern Persia, this charming little bag might have been used for containing small personal belongings such as a mirror, jewellery or coins.
