A most interesting pair of watercolours, stated to have been produced by Myles Birket Foster for a book. The pair were purchased by Major Hartley in 1856 from Attenborough’s Strand, London.
One shows numerous figures working in a harvest field with a young figure and dog taking a break behind a wheat sheaf.
The other highlights three young children at a busy market.
Fragment labels and inscription verso. Unsigned, each study titled lower centre. Presented within glazed gilt frames.
Pen inscription reading: This is one of a set of twelve watercolour drawings by Birket Foster to illustrate a book. The twelve were purchased by Col. Hartley in 1856 from Attenboroughs Strand, London 1856. Birket Foster died 1899.
