A pair of victorian soda glass cylinder vases from a national museum in undamaged and unmarked condition. Circa 1850.

These cylinder glasses were used to house many different preserved specimens from all over the world in transit to great britain for naming and research. Icons of the great age of discovery.

Height. 9 inches.

Diameter. 5 inches.

Today such items can be used for a multitude of display purposes and stand well as aesthetic pieces in their own rite.

Soda glass, or soda-lime glass, is a traditional form of glass composed of silica, soda, and lime. It was the most prevalent type of glass manufactured throughout the nineteenth century for everyday vessels, table glass, and decorative items due to its workability and clarity.

These vases were typically hand-blown using a blowpipe into or out of a cylindrical mould, then finished with a cut or fire-polished rim and a flat or slightly concave pontil base.

Authentic soda glass from this period often exhibits slight irregularities such as tiny air bubbles, subtle flow lines, a lightweight feel compared to lead crystal, and evidence of a snap-off or ground pontil mark on the underside.

Their minimalist geometry allows them to function on a sideboard, dining table, or deep window sill, styled either with single-stem botanical cuttings, minimalist floral arrangements, or displayed empty to catch natural light.

Wash carefully by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes which can cause thermal shock. Refrain from using abrasive sponges or placing historic glassware in a dishwasher.
