A Rare Chamberlain Worcester Porcelain Pastille Burner C.1807 - 1811

19th century
Description

A rare Chamberlains Worcester Porcelain Pastille Burner c.1807 – 1811. The globular bowl supported by three gilt dolphins on a triangular base, richly decorated with a vibrant orange ground and gilt netting. The bowl very finely decorated with naturalistically painted feathers.

Rare mark in red script ‘Chamberlains Worcester Manufacturer to their Royal Highnesses, The Prince of Wales and Duke of Cumberland.’ In 1807 the Chamberlain firm was appointed manufacturer to the Prince of Wales and from 1811 the Prince was appointed Regent. This mark was therefore only used during the brief period of 1807 to 1811. A similar pastille burner is illustrated by Geoffrey Golden on page 272 of his book on Chamberlain Worcester where he notes 'A marked Chamberlain Worcester pastille burner, perhaps the ''Dolphin pastille, feathers £2 2s. 0d.'' as invoiced in August 1815.'

Condition: Some minor chips to the base restored. A small amount of crazing to the glaze on the underside where the mark is situated. Minor retouching to feathers. There would have originally have been a pierced lid.

Height: 14 cm

Length of base: 14 cm

Width of base: 14 cm

Diameter of bowl: 10 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pastille burners were decorative ceramic or porcelain vessels crafted during the Georgian and Regency periods to burn compressed aromatic tablets, diffusing fragrance throughout historic interiors.

These items were manufactured using fine soft-paste or hard-paste porcelain, decorated with hand-applied enamel paints, overglaze gilding, and intricate painted motifs.

Authentic pieces display finely detailed hand painting, signature gilding techniques, precise diaper or scale patterns, and occasionally factory inscriptions or marks on the underside.

Place the object on a mantelpiece, console table, or display cabinet shelf to serve as a refined decorative focal point within classic or eclectic interior schemes.

Dust gently using a clean, soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, chemical solvents, or abrasive wiping that could damage the gilding.
