A Very Attractive Regency Period, 19th Century, Giltwood And Gesso Overmantle Mirror, Having Attractive Carved Decoration To Top Incorporating Central Carved Shell And Foliate Scrolls, Over Replacement Triple Mirror Plates Flanked By Elegant Egyptianesque Scrolling Columns.
As suggested by the name overmantle mirrors were made to sit on, or just above the mantelpiece in large Georgian and Regency homes. They were nearly always low and wide so as to fill the space in an attractive fashion. They come in many different shapes, designs, sized and qualities and this is a particularly nice, but at the same time not excessively elaborate example.
This particular example is a little different to many that you will see, with particularly attractive carved decoration and the unusual egyptianesque type columns which create a nice contrast with their ebonised heads and feet. The mirror plates are probably not original and it’s worth noting that there is not really any silvering of significance aside from some very minor tiny spots.
There are of course various old marks, scuffs, scrapes, scratches etc to the gilded frame which are consumate with the age of the piece and as with most of our stock this item has been cleaned and polished in the traditional fashion within our workshops by our skilled and experienced craftsman before being offered for sale, meaning it is ready to go straight into the home.
