Napoleonic Prisoner of War Bone Spinning Jenny. C1810.

Description

This charming Napoleonic Prisoner of War spinning Jenny which dates from the early 19th century would have been made by a prisoner held captive during the Napoleonic wars.

This hand carved automaton which is made from mutton bone is in the form of a female wearing a large bonnet operating a spinning wheel. She has hand painted detail to the face and carved details to her dress.

These type of carved bone objects would have made by prisoners of war and sold to British military officers in order to make some money or given as gifts.

This early 19th century Napoleonic Prisoner of War item would make a desirable collector's piece.

Material: Mutton Bone. Metal. (No Ivory)

Dimensions: Width: 5.5 cm (2 1/4"). Depth: 4.5 cm (1 3/4"). Height: 11 cm (4 1/4").

Weight: 50 g.

Condition: Good antique condition with signs of wear. Some losses, nibbles and wear. Wheels turn but there is no cord attached to the wheels so does not fully operate.
