This RARE ENGLISH BLUE AND WHITE PRINTED POTTERY JUG commemorates THE ROYAL INDEPENDENT ORDER OF BRITISH MARINERS. It dates from circa 1820.
One side of the JUG is decorated with NEPTUNE, trident in hand, being pulled through the waves on a horse-drawn shell. The other side shows a COAT OF ARMS flanked by a lady bearing a PENNANT, and BRITANNIA. The ROYAL motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE fills the riband beneath.
NELSON’S famous battle signal, ‘ENGLAND EXPECTS EVERY MAN TO DO HIS DUTY’, surrounds a SAILOR standing with a tankard of ale in his hand.
The condition is good. There is a hairline near the base of the handle and some grazing to the glaze on the lip edge. There is no restoration.
Height: 5 inches (12.5 cm)
