George III Silver Nutmeg Grater 1795

This unusual rare GEORGIAN SILVER NUTMEG GRATER was made by Samuel Pemberton in 1795.

The Nutmeg Grater is realistically modelled as a Neo Classical urn and is decorated with star-burst engravings to the body and saw-tooth decoration and a band of fine beading on the domed, pull-off, cover.

Once the cover is removed the silver rimmed steel grater is shown, which is also removable.

The Grater is in excellent condition despite being almost 230 years old and would be a superb addition to any collection.

(Nutmeg was associated with drinking punch in the late 17th and 18th century. It was fashionable for men to carry nutmeg in a pocket-sized silver container with a grater to add freshly grated nutmeg to punch.

During the 17th / 18th century, Nutmeg was a highly valued spice due to its relative scarcity and its many uses. It was used in cooking, as well as for religious, ritual, and medical purposes. In the late 18th century, Nutmeg was being sold at 85-90 shillings per pound. Inflated to today’s prices that is the equivalent of £23 - £25,000 per pound !!!)
