Description

A Fine and Rare 17th Century William and Mary Olive Oyster Table

Circa 1680-1700 – England

This exceptional William and Mary olive oyster table exemplifies the height of late 17th-century craftsmanship, reflecting both the influence of English furniture design and the talents of skilled continental artisans of the period.

The table has a superb cross-grain olive moulded and banded top, richly inlaid with holly.

The frieze incorporates a finely lined oak drawer, retaining its original bifurcated scroll and floral backplate handles, a testament to the table’s authenticity and craftsmanship.

Raised on the original Solomonic (barley twist) and ball-carved legs, showcasing both artistic finesse and structural strength.

The legs are joined by a well-executed ‘Y’-shaped stretcher, adding stability while preserving visual lightness. The table stands proudly on its original bun feet, some displaying subtle, historic restorations appropriate to its age and use.

Commissioned during the William and Mary period (1689-1702), this table reflects a golden era of British furniture design. The influx of continental craftsmen—including French Protestant designer Daniel Marot (1661–1752)—ushered in a fusion of late Baroque style and English sensibilities. These master artisans brought their expertise and artistry to pieces like this, contributing to their enduring beauty and significance.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in late 17th-century England during the joint reign of William III and Mary II, this style is characterised by Flemish and Dutch Baroque influences, featuring intricate veneering, barley-twist turnings, decorative floral inlays, and curved X-frame stretchers.

Oyster veneering was achieved by slicing small branches or roots of trees, such as olive, walnut, or laburnum, transversely at an angle. These circular or oval slices, exhibiting prominent annual growth rings reminiscent of oyster shells, were laid side-by-side onto a timber carcass to form geometric patterns.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, thick hand-sawn veneers showing slight irregularities, original brass drop handles with teardrop or star-shaped backplates, and authentic hand-turned barley-twist legs joined by mortise and tenon construction.

This detailed accent piece serves well alongside contemporary seating in a living room, positioned in a hallway, or placed within a study to create contrast between historic wood figuring and modern minimalist architectural elements.

Maintain a stable indoor humidity level to prevent the thin veneer slices from lifting or cracking. Clean dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax or microcrystalline wax sparingly to preserve the wood finish.
