Large Victorian Silver Buckle Locket Pendant

19th century
Description

A highly decorative large sterling silver locket dating from the 19th century.

The belt buckle symbolises eternity, loyalty, strength and protection. It represents the binding love between the giver and the wearer, and also a love everlasting, as the loop has no beginning and no end. It was often used on Victorian betrothal and wedding jewellery, as well as in mourning jewellery as a mark of respect, remembrance and enduring love. Queen Victoria reportedly caused a surge in the popularity of buckle jewellery when she wore a buckle ring to symbolise her induction into the Order of the Garter.

Size: Approximately 4 x 4.8cm not including the bail, 6.5cm total drop.

Weight: 13.4g.

The locket is in good antique condition with minor surface wear for its age and a couple of minor pinprick dents to the back, see photos. It closes and stays shut when worn but the alignment of the two halves is not perfect so there's a slight gap between the edges at the bottom when it's closed (see photos). If we're being super picky we could note that the bail is very slightly skewed, but the locket still hangs nicely.

Hallmarked for sterling silver (Birmingham 1891) on the back and stamped with the silver lion passant mark on the back of the bail.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
