A fine set of seven BRONZE MEASURES beautifully engraved for the West Riding of Yorkshire and dated 1861. This impressive (and quite rare) solid bronze set comprises: Imperial Gallon (with two handles); Imperial Half-Gallon; Imperial Quart; Imperial Pint; Imperial Half-Pint; Imperial Gill and Imperial Half-Gill. Various stamped and dated “proof” marks together with Customs & Excise stamps can be found around the rims. In excellent condition as one would expect with solid bronze. Dated 1861; priced for the set of seven.

** These measures were used by Customs & Excise to ensure that traders were not under-selling their customers. Penalties for such offences were harsh: heavy fines or sometimes banishment to Australia or America as convicts!
