Lovely Coastal Waters Scene from Whitby Painter George Chambers, (1803-1840)
Born into a Poor Family in Whitby, His Father was a Seaman, Young George Was Set to Work at the Age of only 8 Years
on Coal Sloops in Whitby Harbour, Moving on at the Age of 10 as a Cabin Boy on Coastal Vessels.
Eventually Becoming a Cabin boy on a Brig Trading in the Baltic and Mediterranean.
In 1825 he finally arrived in London by Sea, He had Previously Taken Drawing Lessons from John Bird and in London
met a Former Whitby Resident who was now Landlord of the Watermans Arms Wapping, this gave him the Chance to
sell his Work to the Clientele,
He Eventually Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1828-29 and again in 1838.
Also the Society of British Artists 1828-1838.
He received a number of Royal commissions which remain in the Royal Collection to this Day
in Good Condition being Reframed at some point possibly in the mid 20th Century
Signed Bottom Right, this is now underneath as the canvas was shortened, probably to save it when reframed.
