A striking painted plaster bust of Princess Marie-Louise Thérèse of Savoy-Carignan (1749-1792), later known as Princesse de Lamballe, after Augustin Pajou (French, 1730-1809), c.1900.
Princess de Lamballe was an Italian-French courtier, aristocrat of the House of Savoy, and royal confidante to French queen Marie Antoinette. She is also one of the most famous victims of the Reign of Terror.
Princess Marie Thérèse Louise of Savoy-Carignan was born in Turin on September 8, 1749. In 1767 she married Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, Prince de Lamballe, who was related to the royal family. Her husband died soon afterwards. The young widow became a confidante of Marie-Antoinette and, soon after the latter became queen, the Princess became Superintendent of the Queen''s Household; the highest ranking lady-in-waiting. She was brutally killed in 1792 during the French Revolution.
Label for '' Musée du Louvre'' verso and numbered ''9986'' - probably part of a reproduced sculpture collection by the Louvre museum. The bust has two small areas of ''touch-ups'' to the paint (please see photographs) but remains in a very good condition overall and displays extremely well.
