19th Century Coconut Curiosity With Hand Painted Address

£190    $238    €226
This is a curious and interesting piece of social history. A coconut painted in black with gold writing and addressed to ''Mrs. S Edge, Caevatry House, Bridgend, S Wales, UK''. Probably sent by a soldier to his wife or mother. Interestingly, the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and South Wales Borderers Regiment both fought in Burma (Myanmar) during WW2, which could be where the coconut originated from. However, it might well date back to the late 19th century from the 3rd Anglo-Burmese War. Caevatry (Often spelt Caeffatri) still exists today and was a 17th century manor house.

Wear to paint, but in excellent antique condition.
