Antique French Art Deco Mahogany Walnut & Maple Serpentine Sideboard Cupboard (Circa 1930)

1920 - 1940
Description

This is a highly decorative and fine quality antique French Art Deco sideboard, constructed from mahogany, walnut and maple, with a stunning serpentine shape, circa 1930, in excellent original condition.

This Art Deco credenza, which was made in Paris, France during the 1930’s boasts a stunning serpentine front, with “stepped” top section and curved sides.  The Art Deco sideboard comprises a central maple wood door, decorated with lozenge shaped ebony string inlay, flanked by two large serpentine mahogany doors.  The shaped doors retain the original chrome metal swirl shaped handles and key escutcheon, along with the original brass lever lock and original working key.

Inside the French Art Deco sideboard, the backs of the shaped doors are decorated with stunning figured walnut timbers.  The internal cupboard comprises a fixed shelf, decorated with maple edging and ebony string inlay.  The central door opens to reveal a central shelf, which is also lined with maple and ebony string inlay, but also a single working maple drawer, also decorated with ebony string inlay.

The French Art Deco sideboard stands on its original raised shaped plinth and retains its original backboards.  The French Art Deco cabinet was ingeniously designed to dismantle into manageable parts for ease of transit and access even up the smallest of stairs or through the narrowest of doorways.  The top, main frame, doors, backboards and plinth are designed to dismantle to allow for easy transportation.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Art Deco furniture from the 1930s features streamlined geometric forms, rich wood veneers, exotic timber inlays, and sleek metal hardware, reflecting the transition from ornate early Deco to modernism.

Cabinetmakers favoured high-grade veneers such as mahogany, walnut, maple, and amboyna applied over solid hardwood frames, often using hand-cut dovetail joints and precise marquetry patterns.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct hardware, hand-carved or inlaid geometric details, solid back panels, era-appropriate lock mechanisms, and evidence of hand-applied French polish finishes.

Position the piece as a focal point against a neutral backdrop, pairing it with contemporary artwork, minimalist table lamps, or metallic decorative accents to complement its geometric proportions.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the wood grain twice yearly while avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to heat sources.
