A Regency Rosewood Sofa Table, C1830, 90cm Extending to 147cm

19th century
For Sale by Gilt and Gesso
Description

A Regency Rosewood Sofa Table, C1830, 90cm Extending to 147cm.

A handsome rosewood sofa table, circa 1830 with 2 frieze drawers and pedestal with concealed castors.

A very fine early 19th century, English antique table of elegant proportions and adaptable size. With figured walnut veneer top, over 2 green felt lined frieze drawers and octagonal column pedestal to its base and original castors beneath.

A striking English antique sofa table or hall table, writing table etc.., the top measures 89-90cm width with 2 drop ends which open to 147cm.

Presented in mostly excellent, original condition without evidence of any historic structural repairs. Some minimal areas of missing beeding to the front edge as featured in photos, a marginal colour shade difference to the top and drop ends, due to the ends mostly not being opened and less exposure to light and a repair to the central grain on the top, likely due to atmospheric changes but very minimal and not immediately noticeable.

We may decide to put into workshop and have the above mentioned areas corrected and relist and revised price but we feel it is mostly excellent and very fit for purpose and priced sensibly to reflect.

A striking, super quality William 1V table, well constructed by a skilled cabinet makers to an exceptionally high standard of craftsmanship and detail.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Regency sofa tables were designed to sit behind a sofa or along a wall. They feature two hinged drop leaves to adjust length, shallow drawers in the frieze, and a sturdy central pedestal or trestle base suited for drawing room activities like writing or tea service.

High-status timbers such as rosewood and mahogany were the primary exterior materials, valued for their deep graining and rich tone. Secondary woods used for drawer linings and internal frames typically included oak or pine, while brass was used for castors, drawer handles, and decorative mounts.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on frieze drawers, original brass castors, and natural hand-finished patination on the rosewood veneer. Look for period-appropriate construction details such as hand-planed secondary timbers and historical wear along the footrest and pedestal base.

A Regency sofa table functions as a console behind a sofa, an entry table in a hall, or a compact writing desk. Pairing its dark polished timber with modern artwork, minimalist ceramic lamps, or modern sculptural objects creates an eclectic design contrast.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the moisture of the wood. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent bleaching, drying, or veneer lifting.
