A very decorative and versatile Georgian sterling silver snuffer tray of a rare style. Snuffer trays are rarely seen with a wooden base and a baize lining to protect the furniture. It has a beautiful deep shine and a pleasing feel to the touch. They are commonly used as a very decadent pen tray in more recent times.
Fully hallmarked sterling silver, 1774 London.
The makers mark is half rubbed and I have not identified the maker.
Free from any splits to the pierced rim.
Some light wear to the base.
It sits steady and true.
As the last photograph shows there is a very old restoration that can be seen on a close inspection.
19.6cm by 8cm.
5cm height to the tip of handle.
224 grams.
