Exceptionally Rare English Aesthetic ''Beehive'' inkwell & Pen Tray with Agate Bodied Bees c1869,
 
London, hardstone mounted gilt bronze, the inkwell modeled as a beehive formed from wound rope, the hinged lid opening to bronze/glass inkwell insert in perfect condition, together with a matching pen tray, equally stunning all decorated with agate and ormolu bees, the inset inkwell signed Howell James and Co. Regent Street. This is a rare and stunning pair of items offered in fantastic condition. The agate bodies of the bees are beautifully carved and coloured. These sets are exceptionally rare to find, beautifully marked to the edge of the inkwell base and the pen tray with a Victorian lozenge stamp indicating date of manufacture, and also stamped G.B & Sons.TThe full English design registration diamond-shaped lozenge can be found, dating the piece to 1869. The makers initials also present, G.B & Sons to both pieces.
