Pair Staffordshire Figures Lakin & Poole Elijah & The Widow. Circa 1795.
£850 $1,157 €973
Extremely rare pair of Antique Staffordshire Figures Lakin & Poole - Elijah & The Widow. Circa 1795. Possibly unique.
Elijah and The Widow from the Lakin & Poole pottery Staffordshire. Standing approx 9'' tall, these delightful figures are important examples of the Staffordshire potter''s art. Recently repatriated home to the UK for further research and record. These are displayable ''as is'', and are important historic pieces. No impressed mark, but these are a known Lakin & Poole pair, but with unique and unrecorded variation.
Very few exist, but they are all so interesting (regardless of condition). Of note, this pair are not sculptured on marble bases. The Elijah sculpture and features appear to be identical to other known pieces. However, ''The Widow'' has two important variations, notably the position of the hand where her head is resting, and her other hand sculptured and positioned differently, without holding the bread. These two features are unique to this piece, and to... date, appear to be unrecorded. Overall superb pair that have surprisingly survived over 200 hrs. Truly beautiful.
Condition: Old damage and crazing. Old partial restoration on both figures, particularly to the arms. Lacking Raven (a fragment of claw is bottom left of the Elijah sculpture).
*Thomas Lakin and John Ellison Poole lasted only from 1791-1796. Lakin and Poole figures and groups are quite recognizable because they share common features: they are recorded to stand on subtly marbled bases, the figures have receding chins, the style is neoclassical, the color palettte is very pastel, the titling (when found, but not on these pieces) is beautifully done with the precision associated with print rather than free-hand painting.
