Antique French 18ct Gold Cameo Brooch Agate Victorian - C.1880

£1,650    $2,026    €1,959
We are delighted to offer this stunning antique Victorian French 18ct gold agate cameo brooch/pendant made c.1880 (period antique box included).

The cameo depicts a lady ''in profile'' (side on) in exceptional detail, intricacy and depth. Despite its age, the engraving remains deep and crisp which can be further appreciated upon closer inspection under natural lighting. The high relief wonderfully displays facial features and the clothing and the play of light on the translucent background creates a beautiful contrast (changing colours from an almost purple to brown to grey colour) upon viewing the cameo from different angles.

Areas such as the hair is particularly impressive and notable with remarkably fine detailing. The glossy texture of the unengraved background allows for the white foreground to stand out even more with the portrait presenting a very clean stone/marble-like white shade.

Such intricacy and attractive proportions of an almost lifelike texture/facial expression in the manner of Renaissance sculptures is a testament to the engraver''s skill upon crafting such a piece. The cameo is likely of Italian origin whilst the gold mount is marked with French 18ct gold marks. The border is equally delightful with a thick and heavy guage of gold used - a simple yet majestic mirror finish that accentuates and brings out the best of the cameo''s features.

The reverse side of the brooch is engraved with an inventory number 12667 and has a pin which allows it to be worn as a brooch with jumpers, jackets or coats. Furthermore, the bail at the top allows for this piece to be worn as a magnificent pendant necklace.

Not only would this piece make for an excellent collectable/display but also serves as a versatile piece of antique French jewellery to wear on special occasions. Certainly impressionable and distinguished, this piece would be a wonderful conversation starter and the perfect way to share your passion of history and antiques.
