Popularised in the late eighteenth century by cabinetmaker Thomas Sheraton, a secretaire bookcase combines an upper glass-front cabinet for book storage with a drop-down writing surface and drawers below. These designs are characterised by slender proportions, straight lines, geometric astragal glazing, and decorative timber inlays.

High-grade mahogany was the primary timber used for the main carcase, complemented by satinwood, rosewood, or tulipwood for decorative crossbanding and interior drawer fronts. Internal drawer linings typically featured pine or oak, with brass handles, key escutcheons, and mouth-blown crown glass used for the glazed doors.

Genuine pieces from this period exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-sawn drawer linings, and original brass hardware displaying minor variations. Authentic mahogany of this era shows deep natural oxidisation, hand-shaped astragal glazing bars, and slight timber shrinkage consistent with natural movement over time.
