Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine watercolour by the artist John Atkinson 1863-1924, depicting a ploughing team working in a landscape setting. The technique is superb with a confident use of watercolour in the broad brushstrokes and washes of colour. The work is signed to the lower right; ‘J Atkinson’. John Atkinson 1863-1924 is most famous for his animal paintings, particularly of horses. He was born in Newcastle and trained at the Newcastle College of Art under Wilson Hepple. He became a professional artist in 1901 after moving to Whitby. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, and the Staithes Art Club, although he did not join until its final year of existence. This painting is a fine example of the artist’s work in excellent condition with bright clear colours. The work is in the original gilt frame of an unusual double form and the whole is in excellent condition. C.1900.
