Antique Victorian Solid Silver Card Case Exquisite Engravings - 1844

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Artisan Antiques

We are delighted to offer this exceptionally fine and exquisite Victorian solid silver card case with marks for Wheeler & Cronin, Birmingham 1844.

This card case presents some of the finest and exemplary features which remain in exceptionally good and crisp condition.

What is particularly unique and remarkable is the raised edges that form an acanthus border on both sides, raising the profile of the case and distinguishing itself from counterpart cases. This would have been a further laborious and costly process and a sign of opulence and exceptional craftsmanship.

Needless to highlight, both sides are profusely decorated with an engine-turned background with further acanthus scrolls that have all been wonderfully hand engraved with an immaculate finish.

A cartouche is present in the centre with an engraved monogram.

Imagining the time, effort and craftsmanship that would have gone into making one single card case of this calibre is certainly very impressive. One can envision how challenging it would be to simply draw such a design on paper, let alone engrave on silver, without a single mistake nor slip of the hand which would have resulted in the item having to be melted down again.

Understandably, its aesthetic beauty and magnificent craftsmanship would divert attention away from its use and practicality, however, we believe such a versatile and sleek style of these cases allows for multiple contemporary uses whether be it for carrying business cards, credit cards or some cash.

A practical yet exquisite accessory for the distinguished individual and unlike anything else today - an inevitable conversation starter and a refined manner of expressing your passion for fine antiques.

The case is hallmarked with full English marks on the inner bezel where it opens.
