Wooden Dial Regency Fusee Wall Clock, Stunning

£4,950    $6,409    €5,929
Clockwise is delighted to welcome into its collection this stunning and incredibly rare Regency mahogany fusee dial timepiece. Whether for a collector or as a standalone hero piece this is a gorgeous piece of horological history.

The four knopped pillar single fusee movement has tapered cavetto-shouldered bottle-shaped plates and anchor escapement regulated by lenticular bob pendulum, the backplate engraved with a letter B. It has just benefitted from its once every two decade service and as such commands a three year guarantee.

The 16 inch slightly convex circular wooden cream painted Roman numeral dial has been refinished to a very high and original standard and is inscribed J & T Farr, Bristol to the centre. Generous original brass spade hands sit behind a heavy hinged convex-glazed cavetto moulded brass bezel which retains its working lock and key.

The mahogany case has also been restored and a narrow caddy-moulded dial surround frames the dial and is secured via matching pegs to the rear box case surround. The rear box case incorporates an inspection door to the right hand side and pendulum access flap to the bottom, all of this sitting over a decorative shaped pendant back panel to the base.

The inside of the backboard has an indistinct ink stamp for Strike One, ...Camden Walk London N1. This was/is a high-class antique shop and a date of purchase from 1968 is present under their stamp. All in all a substantial and imposing piece.

J. and T. Farr are recorded in Moore''s ''The Clockmakers Of Bristol'' as working in Bristol until 1822. It is most likely that this piece records a working arrangement between John Farr, who worked as a goldsmith and watchmaker from Claire Street, Bristol, 1771 until at least 1801; and Thomas Farr who was apprenticed to John in 1784. There was also Stephen Farr from this clockmaking family allowing their presence to span fron 1771 - 1830.
