Gyrth Russell was a prolific and clever artist whose works were much sought after during his lifetime and have become increasingly more so since his death. He is considered one of the best coastal painters of the 20th century. Russell was born in Nova Scotia, where his father was an MP and Supreme Court Judge. He trained at the Halifax and Boston Schools of Art. Notably, he witnessed and sketched the cable ship Mackay Bennett returning to her Halifax station with her decks piled high with coffins containing bodies found after the Titanic disaster of 1912. He later studied at the Academie Julian and Academie Calorossi in Paris. At the outbreak of the Great War he became an official War Artist for the Canadian Sector and worked in France, with Augustus John, William Orpen and Frank Brangwyn. He also made etchings and poster prints to support the war effort and took part in the Canadian War Memorial Exhibition of 1919. Considerable artistic success between the wars saw him elected to membership of most leading art societies and extensive exhibiting at the major galleries.
