The original Marly Horses were commissioned in 1739 by King Louis XV of France and created by sculptor Guillaume Coustou for the Chateau de Marly. The iconic design depicts a horse tamer restraining a rearing wild horse, becoming widely reproduced in smaller cast bronzes throughout the nineteenth century.

Nineteenth-century French equine statues were predominantly cast in bronze, brass, or spelter using sand-casting or lost-wax techniques. These metals were finished with patination, gilding, or protective lacquers to highlight anatomical definition and details.

Authentic nineteenth-century castings display precise, hand-chased muscle definition, substantial weight, and realistic wear patterns or natural oxidisation in carved crevices. Many authentic examples feature foundry stamps, signatures, or French maker marks near the base.

A metallic equine statue serves as a striking focal point when styled on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard top, or executive desk. Set against dark wood panelling or neutral backdrop walls, the piece creates an elegant classical statement.

Regularly dust the statue using a dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean intricate areas. Avoid harsh liquid polished compounds, and apply a thin layer of clear microcrystalline wax annually to guard against surface oxidisation.
