An Absolutely Lovely 18th Century Oak Coffer or Blanket Box.

18th century
Description

A proper piece of antique oak! An absolutely lovely 18th century oak coffer or blanket box. This lovely ancient piece of furniture could surely tell some tales! The hinged lid opens to a large interior with a good storage capacity. The front of the piece features carved detail and has been fitted with ringlet handles to form the illusion of drawers. The coffer has had a range of wonderful repairs and modification over the years which have only added to its charm and character, especially the reinforcement bar that someone has lovingly added possibly 200 years ago! Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A mule chest is a traditional storage vessel combining a top-opening coffer lid with one or more drawers built into the lower section. Popular throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, it bridged the evolution between basic blanket chests and modern chests of drawers.

Historic coffers were primarily built from solid English oak, constructed using hand-cut joinery such as pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved decorative friezes, and hand-forged iron strap hinges or brass escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces show signs of historic hand-tooling, including uneven saw marks, wooden peg joinery, natural shrinkage across wider timber panels, and a rich, uneven patina built up over centuries.

A carved oak coffer provides texture and weight in modern rooms, serving as entryway seating, hallway storage, or placed at the foot of a bed to contrast crisp contemporary linens.

Preserve solid oak by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and severe humidity fluctuations to prevent timber movement.
