As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this large scale Meiji Period (1868-1912) articulated iron crab Jizai okimono by the well known armorer and arguably the most coveted maker of Jizai okimono, Myochin Muneyoshi, his exact dates unknown but extensively recorded as working during the Edo to Meiji period. On this occasion Myochin has manufactured a larger scale articulated iron crab okimono with moving legs, mouth, pincers and eyes, its shell realistically modelled in exemplary detail. This rare creature has been fully artist signed to the underside suggesting that it was manufactured by Myochin Muneyoshi at the ripe old age of 77. A fascinating and increasingly scarce object that would sit well in any Japanese Meiji period metalwork collection, whilst also holding a broad appeal to the many Japanese armour collectors, who will certainly appreciate the skills involved in hand beating iron into articulated animals.
