An Art Nouveau Brass Matchbox Holder with central Essex Crystal of a Jockey on horseback. There is a tray for used matches to the front and two holes at the back of the holder so that it can be walled mounted if desired – circa 1890.
*An Essex Crystal refers to a type of carved and painted crystal used predominantly in jewellery, particularly during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The technique involves carving an image in reverse on the flat back of a rock crystal (usually quartz) cabochon, and then painting the carving with fine details. The crystal is highly polished on the domed front, creating a magnified, three-dimensional effect, which makes the image look realistic and lifelike when viewed from the front.
