EARLY DERBY GROUP OF ''TIME CLIPPING LOVE''S WINGS''. 20cm sculpture. Circa 1760 - 1775.
Modelled as a bearded winged old man subduing the struggling infant Cupid in order to clip back his wings, a scythe, an hour glass and a globe at his feet, the rocaille base moulded also with a skull and with a crown.
Figure of Time Clipping the Wings of Love, soft paste porcelain, painted in yellow, pink, purple, blue, green, brown, black, turquoise and iron red overglaze enamels and gilt. Elderly bearded man with large white wings, dressed from waist down in a pale yellow robe with purple, red and gilt flowers and pink lining. He sits against bank of mottled green and brown with right leg forward, holding Cupid, figure of Love against his knee with left arm. Cupid struggles against him as he spreads out Cupid''s right wing ready to clip it with scissors held in right hand (missing). Symbolic objects scattered at the old man''s feet include brown hourglass, quiver of arrows in purple and brown, crown in red and gilt, turquoise wreath, whitish skull and globe painted with streaky patterns in green, yellow, purple, brown and red. Scrolling Rococo base, picked out in turquoise and gilt.
Excellent condition. Underside of base with firing cracks (not untypical) and fully stable. Correct patches to base, authentic for the early pieces.
