Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French bronze sculptures of the late 19th and early 20th centuries frequently feature figurative subjects, fluid movement, and mythological themes influenced by the Art Nouveau movement. Artisans utilised sand-casting or lost-wax techniques to achieve anatomical detail and dynamic postures.

Cast in bronze metal, these figures were treated with chemical patinas to produce surface tones ranging from dark brown to green or black. The cast bronzes were then mounted onto polished marble or stone plinths to provide weight and stability.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit artist signatures or foundry marks inscribed directly into the cast bronze metal. A cold surface temperature, clear definition in cast details, and genuine surface oxidation further distinguish original bronzes from spelter or resin reproductions.

A figurative bronze functions effectively as a focal piece on a mantelpiece, marble console, or within a bookshelf niche. Positioning the sculpture near ambient lighting highlights the cast contours and dark metallic surface tones.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush, avoiding liquid polishes or chemical solvents that strip the patina. Applying a thin coat of microcrystalline wax periodically protects the metal against atmospheric oxidation.
