Rare pair of 18th century George III Period display bookcases.
The dentil moulded cornice is surmounted on highly figured vertical cut mahogany veneers above a pair of glazed doors. The oval-shaped astragal glazing arrangement is finely inlaid with ebony stringing and the doors open to reveal three adjustable shelves.
The lower drawer section of the bookcase is crossbanded with contrasting flamed mahogany panels with outlining boxwood stringing and fitted with the original gilt brass oval drop handles with oval patera to the centre.
One of the drawers, to one of the bookcases, opens to reveal a fully fitted bespoke secretaire, with an interior arrangement of mahogany-lined drawers and pigeonholes above a green baize writing surface. The other bookcase has the same pull-out drawer but is unfitted and designed for storage.
The cupboard doors to the bottom section of the bookcases are made with ascending flamed mahogany oval panels and crossbanded with ebony and boxwood st...ringing and (on one of the cabinets) open to reveal a bank of three full length drawers which retain the original gilt brass swan neck handles. The other bookcase opens to reveal a cupboard with an adjustable shelf.
The bookcases are raised on elegant plinth bases and crossbanded with a bold mahogany outline and terminate on fine bracket feet.
92cm deep when the display cabinet drawers are open.
