Antique Porcelain Figurine of Bacchus Putto, Kpm, Germany, ?. 1850

19th century
Description

This antique, hand-painted porcelain figurine of a Bacchus Putto was made by the Berlin-based KPM (Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur) in Germany . The piece portrays Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, as a putto—a chubby, nude child often depicted in fine art. This mythological motif was widely popular among famous artists and porcelain manufacturers of the time. Dresden factories, for instance, produced entire sets of putti in various forms.

In this specific figurine, the putto is holding a glass of wine in one hand and a bottle in the other, with a ribbon draped across his body. The KPM mark on the bottom corresponds to the production date, reinforcing the piece's authenticity. The craftsmanship is exceptional, with meticulous attention to detail and a fine, delicate painting style, showcasing the high skill of German artisans.

KPM, or the Royal Porcelain Manufactory, is Berlin’s oldest porcelain factory and the second oldest in Germany. It was founded in 1763 and continues its operations to this day. King Frederick II, known as Frederick the Great, played a pivotal role in the factory's development, becoming its owner and providing significant financial support. Under his guidance, the factory adopted the royal scepter as its emblem.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, KPM specialized in producing porcelain dinnerware, figurines, painted plaques, vases, and more. The factory was particularly noted for its mid-18th-century Rococo pieces and the Neoclassicism that followed in the early 19th century. Today, antique KPM porcelain from these periods is highly sought after by collectors.

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, KPM remained one of Europe’s most successful ceramic manufacturers, benefiting from royal and state financial backing. Its name, along with Meissen, became synonymous with German porcelain, just as Sèvres did in France, Royal Worcester in England, and Royal Vienna in Austria.

KPM was a cornerstone of European decorative arts in the 19th century and one of the leading producers of luxury porcelain.

Dimensions: Height 16.5 cm, Width 7.5 cm, Depth 6 cm.

Condition: The item is in excellent condition, with all parts intact, including the figure itself, the colors, enamel, and gilding.

Please review the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. Please note that shipping costs include labor, packaging, and postage.
