Antique Victorian Sterling Silver Cruet Sets (1883)

19th century
For Sale by AC Silver
Description

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver cruet sets; part of our silverware collection.

This impressive pair of antique sterling silver cruet sets consists of two pepper shakers, two salts and two mustard pots, all displayed on their original stands.

Each component of these antique sterling silver cruet sets has a circular rounded form; the stands have a trefoil-shaped form.

The vessels are embellished with exceptional chased decoration depicting figures drinking, conversing and dancing in an outdoor tavern setting; it can be determined that the ornamentation was influenced by Flemish/Dutch genre artwork, such as pieces crafted in the late 17th century by David Teniers II.

The mustard pots are fitted with domed hinged covers, each surmounted with the original figural finials and bear scrolling borders to the rims.

The exceptional mustard pots retain the original branch style handles, ornamented with details replicating the bark and knots.

Each of the silver peppers retains the original, hallmarked push fit cover ornamented to the upper portion with pierced 'pepper' holes.

The rounded salts are each fitted with blue glass liners.

The condiment vessels are fitted to the original hallmarked trefoil-shaped cruet stands, supported by figural feet.

The surface of each stand incorporates three receivers and the rim is encompassed with an applied scrolling border.

Each stand is fitted with a further branch decorated handpiece, featuring a trifurcating lower socket in junction with the paralleling rim.

These exceptional condiment sets are accompanied by two impressive apostle style spoons, crafted in the same year and matching the service in a figural decorative manner.

The condiment vessels were crafted by George Fox and the stands were made by William Leuchars; they all bear the London assay office mark, in addition to the date letter for 1883.

Such original pairs of condiment sets are rare to the market.

Condition

These antique cruet sets are an excellent gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent condition.

The impressive chased decoration has sympathetic wear in keeping with age and use.

Full hallmarks struck to the underside of each piece are all very clear.

Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these antique Victorian sterling silver cruet sets.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the nineteenth century, dining etiquette evolved significantly, giving rise to specialized silver tableware items including cruet and condiment sets. These pieces served as functional dining accessories while demonstrating status through elaborate repousse ornamentation and hallmarked silver construction.

Victorian cruet sets were typically crafted from solid sterling silver or silver plate, often fitted with dark blue glass liners in the mustard pots and salt cellars to prevent salt corrosion.

Authentic British sterling silver pieces bear a full set of official hallmarks stamped into the metal, including the lion passant mark for silver purity, an assay office mark, a date letter corresponding to 1883, and a registered makers mark.

An antique silver cruet set can be placed on a sideboard top, curated within a glazed display cabinet, or arranged as a central focal point on a formal dining table.

Regular dusting with a soft cotton cloth and gentle polishing with dedicated silver cream removes tarnish without eroding detailed repousse work. Glass liners should be washed separately in warm water to prevent moisture contact with the metal.
