Edwardian Sheffield Silver Plated Tea Caddy with lion’s head ring handles, hinged lid and stands on four bun feet. This Tea Caddy includes a silver-plated tea caddy spoon – circa 1905.
* Sheffield silver plate, developed in the mid-18th century, was an innovative process where a thin layer of silver was fused to copper through heat and pressure, creating high-quality yet more affordable silver items. It became renowned for its durability and craftsmanship, with the silver layer wearing evenly over time. In contrast, later forms of silver plating, such as electroplating, developed in the 19th century, involved applying silver via an electrical process. While more cost-effective and capable of producing finer detail, electroplated items often lacked the same durability, with the silver layer more prone to uneven wear.
