A very rare and special Georgian Maltese Cross silver brooch, cased in high carat rose gold and set with sixty-nine foil-backed flat-cut garnets in cut-down closed-back settings characteristic of the period. Foil backing was a technique whereby a thin piece of copper, silver or other alloy, sometimes painted or treated to achieve a particular effect, was set behind the stone to enhance its light refraction. A beautiful and superbly crafted brooch of significant Historical and Social Historical/fashion interest.
The Georgian craze for Maltese Cross jewellery was started by Lady Hamilton, who was presented a gold and gem set Maltese cross by the Tsar of Russian in recognition of her assistance to the Maltese Nation which was in distress after being invaded by the French in 1798.
The Maltese cross was introduced to Malta in the 16th Century and is a key symbol of the islands’ culture. It originated with the order of the Knights Hospitalers of St. John in 1126, its eight points represent their eight obligations: to live in truth, to have faith, to repent one’s sins, to give proof of humility, to love justice, to be merciful, to be sincere and wholehearted, and to endure persecution.
Condition: The brooch has been professionally cleaned and had the hinge and pin tightened so that it is ready to wear. In excellent antique condition, with small scratches and abrasions visible through a x10 loupe and one stone with some surface damage.
Dimensions: 47 x 47mm. 14.3g
